The Internet - Now That's Entertainment

The Internet is now a source of everything from pure entertainment to up to the minute news for the private citizen, but it hasn't always been that way. In fact, in the early days of the Internet (before it even carried that name), it was strictly limited in its use and no one would have dared suggest it be used for any frivolous. The Internet was originally conceived of in the early 1960's as a way to enable multiple computers to access information for research and development purposes in the scientific and military communities.
By 1970, several major universities had super computers sharing information between research groups and libraries as well as exchanging an early form of email. The increase in information necessitated a way of indexing and organizing the information that eventually led to simpler codes, hypertext and ease of use in the 1980's. Initially, the government funded the development of the Internet, so commercial use was prohibited unless it was directly linked to research or education.
Everything changed in the late 1980's and early 1990s, when independent commercial networks sprang up in response to the ease of use and smaller, less expensive computers for office and home use. Since these independent commercial networks could pay for their own Internet connections, they could route to each other and bypass the government's "backbone." By 1995, the World Wide Web was in full swing and the government was out of the Internet business.
Predictably, as soon as the Internet was open to the public, individuals changed its look. Individuals wanted more than just a way to conduct business or do their banking, although such practical applications were certainly popular. Today's Internet provides information, ease and more than anything else, entertainment to home users.
The entertainment industry quickly jumped on the Internet bandwagon by distributing movie trailers, early release teaser chapters from new books and lots of press photos for always-interested fans. They created entire websites dedicated not only to networks, but also to movies, particular televisions shows and even particular fictional characters. Today, many televisions shows have mirror websites with special features that add to the viewer experience. For instance, if you love the show "Monk" on the USA Network, you can play games relating to the character's peculiarities, take quizzes about past episodes and enter contests to win prizes or learn more about the characters to enhance enjoyment of the show. That's savvy marketing.
In an entirely different vein, the Internet brought entertainment of other kinds right into the home that people previously had to go to, not the other way around. Video poker, arcade games, and downloadable streaming video all mean that you can be entertained 24/7 without ever leaving home. Users can play a few hands of cards or enter a tournament. There are tournaments going on around the world at any given time. It's even possible to play a classic pinball game by downloading it to your computer.
In fact, the face of entertainment has changed considerably by allowing individuals to upload their own photos and videos for the world to see and even script and edit their own films. The Internet has made us all into amateur photographers and videographers with a potential audience of millions thanks to YouTube, Flickr and other programs. Not only does the Internet provide us with 24/7 entertainment, it allows us to provide the world with entertainment that we've made. Upload a clip of that amazing wipe-out you made on the slopes during your last ski trip and you'll be amazed how fast you become entertainment for millions of viewers.
Some of the most popular sites on the Internet are celebrity gossip sites. It's human nature in today's hectic world, when we're all hunkered over our computers hours every day working to earn a living, to want to click over to a gossip site for a few minutes and check out how "the other half" lives. It's harmless entertainment news that reassures us that are lives aren't so bad, and we get the guilty thrill of checking out the photos.
With so much instant gratification at our fingertips, the Internet has changed the face of entertainment forever. With the Internet in almost every home, you can no longer feel there is nothing to do. After all, there's always something entertaining just a click away.

Home Entertainment

Today is the world of entertainment. People have busy and stressful lives to lead. So the ultimate stress buster is the home entertainment. Until recently, people went for a movie to a nearby theater for entertainment. But with the introduction of VCR's, it became convenient for them to watch movies at home. But the TV was not as good as the theater screen, which were huge. The quality of the sound was also not as good as theater. But with the introduction of more and more improved versions of TVs, people are now getting more technically advanced home entertainment TVs.

Home theater is one of them. People have welcomed into their homes the big home theater, which is a huge entertainer. To set up a home entertainer, you will have to consider a few things before going ahead. First, it depends on the kind of entertainment you want, that is if you want to watch movies, TV or music or play video. The system can also record TV programs while you are away.

Another home entertainment is the DTH or the Dish TV, which is getting more and more popular among the people. The benefits of the DTH are that, viewers can view all the channels and is not necessary to depend on the local cable operator who can telecast only a limited number of channels. The DTH can inform you about the movie schedules with complete program list of all channels with their timings.

There are many varieties in the home entertainment; one of them is the LCD TV (Liquid-crystal display television), which is now getting popular among the people. This television is lighter and thinner as compared to the CRTs of same display size. Therefore the LCDs are more practical in many ways. With the prices getting lower and lower, it now can be owned by many. The plasma TVs are also the most advanced home entertainer. The plasma TV performs exceedingly well even in low ambient light. You can watch the TV from any corner of the room. The flat screens have a 160 degree viewing angle.

On one hand you will find huge TV screen that are in demand, yet on the other hand the portable TVs also have increased the demand. The portable TVs can be taken anywhere and are now quite advanced in the picture as well as sound quality. The most high-end definition television is the LED TV, which is going to emerge as the most sought after TV today.

Choosing the Right Entertainer For Your Audience

To choose the best corporate entertainer/ entertainment for your Conference, Christmas Party or Gala dinner requires planning and research. Avoiding the mishap of a booking an inexperienced or horrible entertainer can be difficult. The advice you need to ensure your event is a success is contained in this article.

Booking an entertainer in advance is essential. Popular entertainers are often booked months or even years in advance. Upon setting the date for your corporate event, you should then immediately commence searching for the type of entertainment you need and want.

There are many types of corporate entertainment that you could choose for your party or event. Depending on your audience you may want to have a little humour on the night. A stand up comedian to be your MC may assist in lightening the mood. They can not only introduce all the other entertainers and speakers and keep the event in order but they could also do their own routine on the night. Ensure that the comedian or entertainer you select is appropriate for the audience for your corporate event.

A magician, hypnotist or illusionists can be a great novelty and source of entertainment on the night. Not only can they get the audience involved, they can keep the laughter rolling. These types of entertainers add a little class to the event. Magicians, illusionist or hypnotist shows are very interactive and to ensure success, the group should be outgoing and uninhibited. Quiet or shy groups are less likely to participate and have an aversion to going up on stage. So for these groups, this entertainment may not be suitable or enjoyable.

When booking the music for the event, whether you choose a band or DJ, ensure they are familiar with the group and music preference. Ask for a Demo or video of them at an event to ensure that that their music taste will be appropriate for the event your hosting. You may also want to ask for references. Asking for references should apply to all the entertainers your considering.

Generally speaking booking an entertainer directly as opposed to through and agent will avoid miscommunication. It will also allow you to meet with them personally to ensure that they are suited to your event. Often agencies will not allow you to meet the entertainer prior to the event. They add their fees to the overall cost of the entertainer. So by booking directly you could save money on your entertainment. Many entertainers are also willing to customise the performance which is something that is difficult to coordinate via an agent. There are also travel expenses when hiring entertainers. You will need to factor this into the cost of booking a specific entertainer.

To ensure that things run smoothly you should discuss what the entertainer requires on the night. Usually the venue can accommodate them with the sound and lighting equipment and microphones etc. However you should be aware of any other special set up requirement.

Your corporate entertainment should leave you guests excited and wanting more. So keeping the entertainers performance to 30 mins will ensure that guests aren't bored.

Following these simple steps will assist you in making your event stand out with corporate entertainment that keeps you audience dancing, laughing and involved. Enjoy your next corporate event.

10 Ways to Save Money When Booking Top Quality Entertainment For Your Event Or Meeting

1. Ask for a reasonable discount. Try asking for a small discount of about 10% to 15% off. This way you have a better shot of getting the discount than if you asked for 40% off and you also do not offend the talent or company by assuming they would work for whatever amount you could pay. Be honest and sincere when requesting a discount.

2. See if you are able to book the talent for multiple dates or engagements for your event or meeting and ask if there is discount for multiple bookings. Perhaps the act could change their performance a bit so they are not doing the same act twice.

3. Ask the entertainment company if they offer any type of package deal for the type of performer you are looking for. Can they bundle the act with other acts and offer the entire package at an attractive price?

4. Book the entertainment as far out as possible, especially on high demand events such as Christmas or New Years Eve parties. Some entertainers raise their prices annually.

5. Offer to use the entertainment company for next year's event if they are able to meet you on the price of an act. T his way both parties win.

6. Book unique and undiscovered talent. Ask your entertainment company about new innovative talent that is on the rise and see if you can catch the talent on the way up, before they become a high priced act. Good entertainment companies always have their hands on the pulse of the newest talent for their clients.

7. Offer a great incentive for the talent in exchange for a small discount. They might be a free hotel stay, meals, limo to the event, gift bag. Come up with novel incentives that may encourage the act to give you a break, but that do not cost you much if anything at all and have a high perceived value.

8. Get a sponsor to cover the cost of entertainment. This is especially popular if you are looking to book a celebrity or high fee talent for your event. A sponsor is usually more attracted to an event if a celebrity is a part of it.

9. Be flexible with the dates you book. You are most likely going to be able to negotiate a lower price if the event or meeting is during the week than on the weekends, and if it is in the daytime than in the evenings. Ask if the price varies depending on the times and days of the week that you book.

10. Provide all or lots of the AV equipment needed for the act. This is especially true for musical acts and others. Many charge more if they have to bring their own AV equipment. Make sure you mention to them that you will provide all the AV at the event.

How to Book Entertainment For a Corporate Event

There are many inexperienced corporate entertainers out there and booking the best ones for your corporate event can be a challenging experience. Booking a motivational speaker or comedian who has generic experiences and no real unique message to pass on can be de-motivational for your audience. Many bad motivational speakers use their achievements in the work place which they embellish to inspire others and that's it. Audiences can see through this and are usually unimpressed. To ensure that you find good entertainment follow some simple advice and avoid generic inexperienced entertainers that will more than likely have a negative effect on the audience than a positive one.

Planning early is necessary as the best corporate entertainers are often booked in advance. It is important to know the theme and type of entertainment you want as soon as possible as this will dictate the type of corporate entertainment you hire.

Once you have established the theme and focus of the event make a short list of the entertainers that will fulfill this. Briefing all the entertainers thoroughly is essential for them to tailor their material to suit the focus. Good corporate entertainers know how to match their material to the brief established. The brief should also include information about the audience which the entertainer is going to address. This could involve the company overview, the level of the participants in the company and any deficiencies which need particular attention. There is no point telling people things they already know.

Meet the entertainers in person is crucial. You will be able to establish in the meeting the level of professionalism of the entertainer, their attitude and whether this will fit in with the corporate culture as well as their likeability. Good entertainers are able to establish rapport immediately and make the audience like them. Likeability and attitude are important as it will determine how the audience will accept and connect with the entertainment.

Ask for references and level of experience. The corporate entertainer you choose should be a full time entertainer and should have performed at events like yours in the past. They will be able to supply you with a Demo of their work. Don't be afraid to also request a dry run through before the event to make sure that the presentation meets the purpose for which it was intended. At the dry run through you should be able to suggest and make changes to the material.

Remember that people usually have a short attention span and can easily get distracted or bored. An experienced entertainer knows how to keep the audience engaged and also wanting more. A good presentation usually lasts between half an hour and forty minutes. Any longer will certainly make the audience distracted. If the entertainer has a longer presentation then they should present it in multiple parts as to ensure that the audiences, interest are maintained.

Stage craft is extremely important in corporate entertainment, as everyone wants to feel that presentation is directed at them. Experienced entertainers know how to work the stage. They know how to walk in and to command attention and are experts at keeping the audience on point and the crowd under control.

So when booking the corporate entertainment for your next event, ensure that you hire the best entertainment possible by following some simple guidelines. Ask as many questions as possible and book the entertainer that will make your event a success.

Investing In The Entertainment Industry

There is no denying the sheer magnitude of the entertainment industry worldwide - and it shows no sign of slowing down. When deciding what industry to invest in, naturally, you want to choose the most promising and profitable area in which to put your hard-earned money. Growth is an indicator of a healthy business, which would make the entertainment industry an excellent choice. Yet, when business is booming everyone wants a piece of the winning revenue pie. For example, entertainment companies are home to some of the most high-tech and high-paying jobs. Numerous states in the U.S. have begun to compete for these jobs with statewide tax incentives geared to attract entertainment firms to their location. If governments are competing for the opportunity to reap the rewards of the industry, it is natural to expect a similar competition for the best investment opportunities.

To be sure you have an edge over the competition you have to zero in on what type of entertainment in which you want to invest. Trendy. Modern. Technological. Traditional. There are forms of entertainment that fall under all of those categories. The old saying, "there's no business like show business" still rings true, but, today, entertainment is such a broad commercial business, encompassing more than just Hollywood and the silver screen. Original film and television productions are increasing in both quantity and quality across the globe. Modern technology has led to the creation of the ever-growing video game and online entertainment venues. Huge enterprises like theme parks amuse the masses. Vacations help travelers get away from it all. Kids are occupied with a wide-range of toys. Yet the timeless, classical forms of fun such as a night at the theatre and reading a good book are still popular. The successes of Wicked and Harry Potter are a testament to that. Don't forget the entire music industry - iTunes, CDs, concerts... it's all entertainment.

After realizing how vast this glamorous industry is, it makes investment decisions so much easier. Making investments in entertainment does not mean that basic investment principles should be thrown to the wind. Despite the growth and success of entertainment firms, nobody really knows what company is going to shine or what part of the industry is going to soar above expectations. Play it safe and be conservative - choose quality entertainment stocks over quantity, and remember keep your portfolio diversified. There's no reason to change your portfolio to include only entertainment related stocks and bonds.

When considering a diversified portfolio, it is important to realize that many entertainment companies are internally diversified. Take AOL Time Warner, for example. They are a company with multiple entertainment divisions: film, television, records, media/publishing, etc. If ticket sales for films are uncharacteristically low one year, there will hopefully be more people listening to music or reading magazines. There is also the whole other technology side to the company to consider, as well. This type of diversification is common among the entertainment powerhouses. Powerhouse companies like Sony and Disney have established their business in multiple areas of entertainment, and even industries outside entertainment, to balance their success.

Investing in the entertainment sector can be more than just purchasing stock. For those searching for a more venture capitalist approach, there are numerous promising digital media and traditional media companies looking for financial backers. YouTube and MySpace were once such start ups, and their acquisition illustrates just how viable - and profitable - new media opportunities can be. Finding a winning investment opportunity takes research, but also some luck with being at the right place, at the right time. Whether you choose to invest by acquiring content, building a future hotspot, funding a production, or anything else - remember that your investment has to be something you professionally believe will take off.
